  GENERAL INFORMATION

A damaged area on a hdd is called faulty sector or Bad block.

This is a physical problem meaning that the magnetic media of the hard disk is defective. When running a disk utility like Scandisk or Norton Disk Doctor, this damaged sectors are marked with a "B".

Many people asked us how to proceed to recover hard disks with bad blocks. Some of them say  that bad blocks disappear after formatting the hard disks at a low level. In fact, what really happens is that current  programs used for physical formatting do not actually format the disk physically. If  this could be possible, the hard disk would be damaged, because hard disk tracks have a signal that takes action as a guide for the hard disk’s  head. This signal is called servo.

At a low level formatting of  the hard disk, these servos will be erased and the hard disk head will no longer be able to move.  www.fix-hdd-bad-sectors.com

The programs for low level formatting represent utilities for detecting bad sectors and cleaning the disk (for example, for security reasons),without actually low level formatting the disk ( even though their name say so). The main function of these programs is to update the map of the disk's bad sectors. When you activate this program, it scans the hard disk, searching for defective sectors and updating the disk’s map.

Trough the Format command you can run a high level formatting.Using this command the sectors compride in the bad sectors table are skiped. Therefore, in the FAT  won’t be any sector marked with a B, even though the damaged sectors remain on the disk.

The bad sectors are not removed, but they remain noted in the table and,as a result, the system will ignore them.(the bad sectors are hidden).

The manufacturer's program you can find in the utility page is the best program to be applied in the procedure. If bad sectors continue to appear even after you applied this procedure, this means that the magnetic surface is deteriorating and the hard disk is no longer useful.
